Although it would be possible to make it in a standard car, we recommend using a 4×4 vehicle for this one-day excursion. The Valley of Roses begins around Kelaa M’Gouna ant it runs along the Mgoun creek for various kilometres. It is in this valley that roses are harvested around mid May to obtain rose water and other beauty products based on the essence this flower.
However, roses are not the only attraction in this area. Along the route one discovers fantastic landscapes where colours vary from the lush green of the vegetation in the oasis to the black of the volcanic rocks. There are small villages nested among the various valleys and small canyons. The incredible landscape changes again once one reaches the high altitude desert at Ait Youl where the earth colours range from beige to a deep red and occasionally dark purple.
The salt flats know as “Salaried de la Peur” is found in this desert. And depending on the season, one may come across the local Ait Atta nomads driving their herds along the way.
This excursions starts very early in the morning as it may last approximately ten hours. The excursion will reach the restaurant at the Dades gorge for lunch. Depending on the season and the type of vehicle used for the trip, the excursion may venture more off track.
The cost of the excursion for two persons is 950 dhs and 1,350 dhs for four persons.
